Home: Acerca de...

The initiative

The Chilean Salmon Antibiotic Reduction Program (CSARP) is an initiative between the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program and the Chilean salmon farming industry.

The goal is to reduce the use of antibiotics in Chilean farmed salmon by 50 percent and achieve a Seafood Watch Good Alternative rating or equivalent by 2025.

Our goals

The program defines specific guidelines at different levels (site, neighborhood, industry) to reduce the consumption and ecological impact of antibiotic use in the Chilean salmon industry. Additionally, CSARP identifies various knowledge gaps to be addressed in collaboration with academic institutions and researchers. The goal is to further our scientific understanding of the ecological impacts of Chilean salmon in aquaculture.

Report 2017-2019

Report 2022

In February 2020, we ran an analysis on antibiotic use at each site level from CSARP member companies using data collected between 2017 and 2019. This included confirming the antibiotic type, dose, and duration of therapy and biomass treated.

This report summarizes CSARP activities and data on antibiotic use for the three years from 2020 to 2022. It provides industry statistics during that period and the trends related to farming production, species composition, and export markets. The report focuses on the analysis and results of the industry’s use of antibiotics during 2020–22, and discusses the factors that influenced the results.
